Research says that the humble tea leaf has mighty health benefits. Tea contains flavonoids, naturally occurring antioxidants that have been shown to help prevent cell damage. Flavonoids may help reduce the risk of a heart attack or protect against certain forms of cancer.
Clinical studies have also shown that tea helps boost mental alertness, thanks to a special amino acid called theanine.
Green tea has been revered for centuries in the Far East, and it is believed that the Chinese have been using green tea medicinally for at least 4,000 years, employing this amazing beverage to treat everything from headaches to depression.
Now Westerners are beginning to discover that green tea may have great health benefits. Research has shown that green tea may help boost metabolism, stave off arthritis and improve the ratio of good (HDL) cholesterol to bad (LDL) cholesterol. Purdue University researchers have even discovered that a compound found in green tea can help inhibit the growth of cancer cells. What's more, green tea's natural bacteria-killing abilities are thought to help prevent tooth decay.
What makes green tea such a wonder drink? Its unique preparation makes it naturally rich in powerful antioxidants, including epigallocatechin gallate - we call it EGCG for short - which scientists believe gives green tea its cancer-inhibiting and cholesterol-lowering properties. EGCG also helps prevent the abnormal formation of blood clots, which can often lead to heart attack and stroke.
With all these amazing health benefits, you might think drinking green tea would have some side effects, but research says that isn't the case. It does contain caffeine, however, so you may wish to avoid drinking it before bedtime!
